A short guide to Raw Feeding

Raw Feeding for Dogs and Cats: A Natural, Healthy Choice

At Creature Comforts we believe in giving our pets the very best – and for many, that starts with what’s in their bowl. Raw feeding has become increasingly popular as owners look for more natural ways to support their pets' health and wellbeing. But what exactly is raw feeding, and how do you get started?

What is Raw Feeding?

Raw feeding is all about providing your dog or cat with a diet that closely mimics what they would eat in the wild. This typically includes raw meat, bones, offal (organ meats), and sometimes fruits and vegetables. It’s free from artificial additives, grains, and fillers – giving your pet clean, species-appropriate nutrition.

Benefits of Raw Feeding

Switching to a raw diet can offer a range of benefits, including:

  • Healthier skin and shinier coats
  • Cleaner teeth and fresher breath
  • Smaller, firmer stools
  • Improved digestion
  • More energy and vitality
  • Better weight management

Many owners report noticeable improvements in their pets within just a few weeks of switching.

The Right Raw Ratio

The general guideline for raw feeding is the 80:10:10 ratio, which breaks down as follows:

  • 80% muscle meat (chicken, beef, turkey, etc.)
  • 10% bone (raw meaty bones like chicken wings or necks)
  • 10% offal (half liver, half other organs like kidney or spleen)

For dogs, this ratio works well across breeds and sizes. For cats, the same principle applies, but it’s important to ensure they’re getting taurine-rich meats like heart and that their diet is high in protein.

How to Introduce Raw Food

Switching to raw can be done in two ways:

  1. Gradual Transition – Start by replacing one meal or a small portion of your pet’s food with raw, and gradually increase over 7–10 days.
  2. Straight Switch – For healthy pets, some owners opt to switch straight to raw from kibble or wet food, feeding a simple meat like chicken to start.

Always monitor your pet’s digestion and energy levels during the transition, and consult your vet if you're unsure.

How Much Should You Feed?

As a starting point:

  • Dogs: Feed 2–3% of their ideal adult body weight per day.
  • Cats: Feed around 2–2.5% of their body weight per day.

Adjust based on activity level, age, and metabolism. Puppies and kittens will need more frequent feeding and higher percentages as they grow.
