How to Keep Your Dog Cool During The Hot Weather

Keeping Your Dog Cool During Hot Weather ☀️🐾

When the warmer weather rolls in, it’s not just us feeling the heat, our dogs do too! And because dogs can’t cool themselves down the same way we can, it’s really important to help them stay comfortable and safe during hot days.

Dogs mainly cool themselves by panting and through their paw pads, which means they can overheat much quicker than people. Some dogs are even more at risk, including flat-faced breeds like Pugs and Bulldogs, older dogs, puppies, and those with thick coats.

Signs Your Dog May Be Overheating

Knowing what to look out for can make all the difference. Keep an eye out for:

🐶 Excessive panting or drooling
🐶 Bright red gums or tongue
🐶 Tiredness or weakness
🐶 Vomiting or diarrhoea
🐶 Wobbling, confusion, or collapse

If your dog shows any of these signs, move them somewhere cool and shaded straight away, offer small amounts of water, and contact your vet as soon as possible. Avoid using ice-cold water, as this can do more harm than good. Cool water and damp towels are the safest option.

Our Top Tips for Keeping Dogs Cool

💧 Keep Them Hydrated

Fresh, clean water is a must during warm weather. Frozen treats, pet-safe ice cubes, and doggy ice cream can also be a great way to help them cool down while giving them a little treat too!

🌅 Walk During Cooler Times

Try to avoid walks during the hottest part of the day. Early mornings and evenings are much safer and more comfortable for your dog. And don’t forget, pavements can get extremely hot. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

🌳 Make Sure They Have Shade

Whether they’re relaxing indoors or enjoying the garden, always make sure your dog has somewhere cool and shaded to rest.

❄️ Use Cooling Products

Cooling mats, cooling vests, paddling pools, and frozen toys can all help keep your dog comfortable when temperatures rise. We’ve got plenty of summer essentials available in store!

🚗 Never Leave Dogs in Cars

Even on a mild day, cars can become dangerously hot in minutes. Never leave your dog unattended in a vehicle, even for a short time.

Keeping your dog cool during hot weather isn’t just about comfort, it’s about keeping them happy, healthy, and safe. If you need advice on cooling products, summer treats, or ways to help your pup beat the heat, pop into store and we’ll be happy to help! 🐾
